Eike Kusch is the protagonist of Shadow of Memories.
Description[]
A young man visiting the small German town Lebensbaum, he is killed by an unknown assailant, only to be offered by the mysterious Homunculus a second chance at life and an opportunity to prevent his murder.
Biography[]

Past[]
Eike's past is a mystery, even to himself, though the exact details of what he remembers is unknown. Little is known about Eike’s personal life before going to Lebensbaum. He admits that he has no recollection of his parents, nor does he reveal anything about his childhood. It is unknown if he has a job or if he is even aware of his gaps in memory.
In reality, Eike is actually Dr. Wolfgang Wagner, rejuvenated through a deal with Homunculus for eternal youth; his memory was wiped by the djinn when Wagner trapped him back into the Philosopher's Stone after their deal. As soon as his memory was wiped, the de-aged Wagner held onto the stone, finding it beatiful, spending the next 417 years wandering the world with his memory fading from time to time. During his travels, he took up the name Eike Kusch and apparently lost the stone, though it is likely that his amnesia caused him to forget it at the start of the game.
At some point, he became friends with Eckart Brum, the owner of a museum, during a previous visit to Lebensbaum, even giving him his phone number. On 8th of March 2001, Eike eventually explored Lebensbaum again, and entered the local café.
Death[]
While leaving the cafe, Eike is stabbed by an unknown assailant and dies. He awakens however to find himself in Homunculus's realm, where the mysterious being communicates with Eike. At first, Eike is skeptical and ready to reject Homunculus's offer to prevent his death, thinking the latter to be the devil. However, Eike eventually agrees and is given the Digipad, before he is returned to a point before his death.
Taking over his past body, Eike encounters the mysterious Fortune Teller for the first time and is told of when his death is going to take place, along with a hint of when it will take place. Going back an hour into the past, Eike succeeds in engineering his survival by convincing the three maidens to be present at the time of his death. This makes his would be killer change his mind, giving Eike a chance to continue preventing his death.
Travels Through Time[]
Due to the nature of time travel, there are many versions of Eike who originate from alternate timelines, the most common being the version who didn't get the egg letter and the version who did get the egg letter. As a result, it is difficult to make it clear what happened after preventing his first death and before he learns the identity of his killer.
However, it is known he had many more attempts on his life and what he generally did to prevent them: he was nearly killed in a burning building, but went back in time and prevented the fire; he was stabbed again, but changed history so the killer couldn't hide behind a tree; he was killed by a falling vase, but prevented history by resulting in the destruction of the vase before it could fall; he was stabbed yet again, but prevented it by getting a sort of iron plate; he was poisoned, but prevented it by drinking the antidote by turning the art museum into a library; he was run over, but prevented it by making Oleg Franssen famous; and finally he is pushed off a tower, but prevents it by making sure he has a rope to hold on to.
It is also known that through traveling in time, he: met the Wagner family; lost Dana into the time stream; met three members of the Franssen family; interacted with a younger version of his friend Eckart Brum and may have saved his wife; he met Eckart's great-grandfather and his children; and changed history a number of times.
Nearing the End[]
Eventually, Eike finally found Dana in 1584 and regained the stone, while deciding Dana's fate. He returned to the Wagner house and gave it to Wolfgang Wagner, his past self thought neither knew this, and traveled ten days later to find the house in ruins. Upon returning to the present however Eike gets a phone call from Hugo, who had been his killer all along. Hugo blames Eike for the disappearance of his father due to Eike giving him the stone, thus resulting in Homunculus being freed. Hugo was visited by a future version of himself and was given a time machine to take his revenge, and does so by trying to kill Eike. However, unknown to Hugo, the boy's actions only result in the events he was trying to prevent, and he now wants Eike to bring him Homunculus, or he will harm his hostage (either Margarete or Dana). At this point, the timelines diverge into different futures.
Ending A[]
Eike discovers that Homunculus switched the infants Dana and Margarete after meeting him in the towns park in 1980, making modern-day Dana actually Margarete Wagner and medieval-Margarete actually Dana. Furthermore, after visiting the fortuneteller in the modern day, it is revealed that she is the trapped disembodied spirit of Hugo's mother, Helena Wagner, brought back after a failed attempt by Hugo to resurrect her using unmastered alchemy. Homunculus creates a puppet resembling Wolfgang Wagner to attempt to dissuade Hugo from his plans, and after a short discussion, the puppet and Hugo disappear in a haze of smoke. Homunculus slyly reveals he could not call up the spirit of the real Dr. Wagner -as Eike had requested- because he was in fact not dead yet but Homunculus does not disclose Dr. Wagner's whereabouts. While returning the Digipad to Homunculus, Eike accidentally drops the device, which explodes, killing Homunculus with a single piece of shrapnel striking his cheek, which kills him due to his fragile body. Sometime later, it is mentioned that Margarete is now reunited with her biological parents, the Brums, who adopted her, though it appears that none of them are aware of their true relation to each other. Depending on the outcome of a certain time-travelling sub-quest, Eckart's wife and Margarete's mother, Miriam Brum, may or may not be alive as well. While on a date together in the Marktplatz, Eike and Margarete, who are implied to now be in a relationship, return to the spot where Homunculus died, only to discover a large full-grown tree which contains the Philosopher's Stone already embedded in its trunk.
Ending B1[]
Eike discovers the fortune teller's identity and convinces Hugo to enter the hut to meet with her; Helena causes the building to collapse, killing Hugo, who allows himself to be killed by debris in order to be reunited with his mother, though it is not mentioned if her spirit is actually freed by this. He then returns Margarete to the past in which she grew up, with niether discovering that she belongs in the present era. He then goes to Bar Zum Ei to celebrate being alive.
Ending B2[]
Hugo attempt to abandon Margarete in the present, only to have Eckart subdue and scold him (neither he nor Margarete are aware of their true relation to each other). Hugo apologizes and returns to the past with Margarete. He then goes to Bar Zum Ei to celebrate being alive.
Ending C[]
Eike travels to 1580. Hugo searches for his father's research while an elderly Hugo appears with a time machine and offers to teach him to use it. When Eike reveals his presence in an effort to stop young Hugo from listening, the older version panics and tries to escape up the stairs. Margarete gets in his way, and he threatens and tries to strike her with his cane. Hugo rushes to stop him, and the two make contact, causing both Hugos cease to exist due to a dimensional paradox. Margarete collapses, and Eike returns to the present, where he gives the Digipad back. After Homunculus' departure, Eike lies down in the street to look at the stars praising being alive, only to be run over by two drunk men in a car.
Ending D[]
Eike enters the ruined lab and burns Wolfgang Wagner's notes about the Stone, just as Hugo and Margarete enter. Unable to read the burned notes, Hugo apparently never learns about what his father was working on and thus never desires revenge or create a time machine, causing the Hugo and Margarete in the present to disappear. Hugo then decides to live his own life.
In a flashback sequence it is also revealed what happened to to Wolfgang Wagner. Upon summoning the Homunculus, finding his lifetimes work to be trvial he wishes for eternal youth to start his life again. Once granted he reveals a Pentagram drawn on the ground beneath Homunculus which traps him, but befoe being sealed into the Philosopher's Stone once more, he casts a spell on Wolfgang to be wiped of his memories on regularity for eternity.
Ending E[]
Eike asks Dana to return with him to the present in which she grew up, and she agrees. She is then held hostage by Hugo, Eike goes to get Margarete and brings her to the present, where she slaps and scolds Hugo. Tearfully, she tells him she can try and be more like their mother was to them and take care of them both. Hugo apologizes, then returns to the past with Margarete, who had managed to warn Eike about Hugo's plans. Eike and Dana are then about to intimately share a tender embrace but are suddenly interrupted by Homunculus. After a brief conversation in which Eike returns the Digipad to Homunculus, Eike walks Dana back to her apartment.
In a flashabck sequence this time when Wolfgang Wagner summons Homunculus from the Philosopher's Stone, he wishes for the creature to begone from his sight. Homunculus takes a sly interpretation of this and erases him from existance so he can no longer see him. Homunculus ackonloweges the pentagram on the ground and states how that would not work in 1000 years.
The Power of Knowledge[]
As a result of Homunculus making Eike relive every scenario in every timeline, Eike has gained the power to know everything that could happen as well as the knowledge of where he came from, something Homunculus apparently didn't know. Tired of how long he has been doing everything, Eike begins planning a way out of Homunculus's power.
With his knowledge of the Philosopher's Stone and everyone, Eike awakens in an alternate timeline where Hugo apparently decided to not stab him, so he is destined to die in the fire at 14:30 instead. After acquiring the stone and possibly getting a message from an alternate version of himself, Eike goes into the burning building.
Ending EX1[]
In this ending, Eike chooses to go back to 1580 and, after saving Margarete from some angry people like he did originally, he visits his former home. Encountering his younger self, Eike gives him the stone and informs him on how to create the elixir of life before leaving. As Eike heads back to the town square, Eike experiences memories of his wife Helena getting better and his family being happy while he himself slowly fades away into nothing, overjoyed to have finally cheated fate and Homunculus.
Ending EX2[]
In this ending, Eike allows himself to die in the fire, which takes him to Homunculus's realm. Seeing the opportunity, Eike threw the Philosopher's Stone at Homunculus. Because the two are the same being from different points in time, both Homunculus and the stone are erased from history, which thus removes the being's influence from history. This causes Eike to fade into nothing, happy to have freed himself from destiny.
The End of Eike Kusch[]
Regardless of how he did it, Eike fades from existence as history changes forever, altering the lives of every character he met in his life as he remained as Wolfgang Wagner and presumably died near the end of the sixteenth century. In the new alternate timeline created, one that is free from the influences of Homunculus, a man who look exactly like Eike can be seen walking through town only to be hit by a ball. The man return the ball to a young boy who greatly resembles Hugo, before each go their separate ways. It remains unknown if this lookalike is a reincarnation of Eike or simply a descendant of Wolfgang Wagner.
Personality[]
A dominant part of Eike's personality is his determination, with him always finding a way to prevent his death. Eike's death is a powerful influence over his decisions, as Eike desperately wants to survive. However, Eike's determination qualities can also be seen when he does things that he doesn't have to, such as risking his life to save Miriam Brum or going into the burning bar to save the Barman. This highlights his generally selfless and heroic personality.
Another quality that Eike surprisingly has is calmness. Despite being hunted by a murderer, Eike continues to be calm and patient about things, rarely ever becoming stressed or worried. It is unlikely that this is caused by overconfidence, but could serve as a hint to the fact that despite his reoccurring amnesia, Eke remembers how long he has lived and how old he is on a subconscious level. This could mean his calmness and patience originates form the fact that he has seen far too much to be surprised or feel that he needs to rush things.
Eike is, by nature, a very empathic person with a great deal of kindness. Despite what stress he is put under through his adventures, he remains a good and forgiving soul, as shown by how he willingly forgives Eckart for trying to kill Eike. He is also quick to care for new people, as demonstrated by the great lengths he goes for the people he meets. This trait, along with every other personality quality that he possesses, is potentially the reason why he was willing to have never existed than continue being controlled by Homunculus as shown in the EX. Endings.
Physical Appearance[]
Eike Kusch has long, blond hair tied back into a pony tail. He is always seen wearing a bright green jacket and dark green trousers, with brown shoes and a black shirt. In the juggler outfit, he wears a large white nightshirt type clothing with a hood, along with a mask.
Powers and Weaknesses[]
Using the Digipad, Eike is able to time travel to different eras in history as well as alter events. The digipad also seems to make him immune to these changes and apparently enables him to remember the original timelines. This ability is what enables him to escape Homunculus and change history for the better. However, a weakness of this is that contact with himself from a different point in time will result in hm being erased from history, while being in the wrong time period at the fated time of his death will also cause him to be erased.
One ability he is unaware of, at least until the EX. Endings, is his immortality. Cursed with it by Homunuclus 1584 before the events of the game, it has prevented him from aging beyond his youthful form. Because of this, Eike has remained young and healthy for four hundred and seventeen years. However, it doesn't make him impossible to kill, as proven by Hugo. It is unknown if he has been killed at any other point, though it is likely and is it is also likely that Homunuclus was the one who ensured that his death was always prevented until he reached the present.
His immortality comes with a weakness however, though it is unknown how serious this weakness is. Because of the curse, Eike is doomed to periodically suffer from amnesia, thus forcing him to learn everything he knew before all over again. This means that he can never form lasting relationships with people as he is fated to forget them at some point. It is unknown if this caused him to forget any skills he learned over the centuries. In the EX. Endings, he apparently loses this weakness and has all his memories of his past, and alternate timelines, restored.
Relationships[]
Homunculus[]
Eike has known Homunculus for over four centuries, but by 2001 has forgotten everything about him. At first believing Homunculus to be the devil, an accusation that suits Homunculus, Eike is grateful for a chance to prevent his death. During the next few encounters with Homunculus, Eike attempts a civil and friendly relationship with Homunculus. However, after each encounter Eike grows more and more suspicious of the djinn and quickly loses all trust in Homunculus upon learning some of the things he had done. Despite this, in the main endings he parts ways with Homunculus on mostly civil terms. In the EX. Endings, due to having memory of everything Homunculus did, Eike was willing to do whatever he had to do to beat Homunculus. This included keeping Homunculus trapped in the stone in the EX1 ending, or erasing him from existence in the EX2 ending.
Eckart Brum[]
Eckart is apparently Eike's only friend in the present and at first, Eckart's only source of company beyond his cats. The two get along very well and have a strong friendship that seems to stem from a desire to not be alone. However, Eckart has suspicions and doubts about Eike due to his resemblance to the man he believes somehow is responsible for the death of his wife and kidnapping of his daughter, which Eckart attributes to Eike being the man's son. However, despite this he still tries to remain a kind relationship with Eike. However, when he is told by Hugo to kill Eike in return for his daughter, Eckart willingly tried to to kill Eike, especially after Eike mentioned Eckart's daughter. However, Eike survived and willingly forgave his friend, showing is understanding and how much he valued their friendship. In Ending B2, Eckart redeems himself by saving Eike from Hugo, despite not having to. Eike's friendship with Eckart is greatly shown by how much effort he puts into saving Eckart's wife Miriam.
Dana[]
While neither knew it, Dana was Eike's biological daughter from when he was Wolfgang Wagner. Because neither knew, though Dana at one point mentioned he gave of a dad vibe, the two flirted a little upon their first meeting. However, when they met again after Dana was left in the 1580s for four years, the two were friendly towards each other, and Dana was being courted by someone.
Margarete Wagner[]
Saving her from angry townspeople after accidentally arriving in 1580, Margarete quickly became romantically interested in Eike. Her interest only increased as he told her the truth about him being from the future, and she has an obvious infatuation with him. However, Eike is apparently unaware of her attraction to him until about halfway through the game, and is unsure how to handle it. He is also troubled due to believing that she might be his ancestress, but if he admits this to her, Margarete decides to stay in the past and live the life fate apparently has decided for her, due to realising that if she doesn't, Eike would never have been born. In Ending A, after allowing Margarete to remain in the present and be adopted by the Brums, the two of them are seen walking together, possibly in a relationship.
Hugo Wagner[]
Much like in his previous identity, Eike has a complicated relationship with Hugo. When they first met in 1580, Hugo was fascinated by Eike's strange clothes and even guessed that Eike was a time traveler after finding the Digipad, but was polite and friendly to Eike. As Eike visited the Wagner family over the next four years, Hugo remained friendly and along with Margarete became one of the two people to know for sure that Eike was from the future. However, their relationship took a dark turn after Wolfgang Wagner vanished and Hugo learned that Eike had given him the Philosopher's Stone. After Hugo was visited by his future self, the young man began to blame Eike for what happened to his family and became determined to kill him. Despite his actions, Eike never seemed to hold any contempt or hatred for Hugo, possibly understanding the boy's anger. Also, Hugo apparently known he can't blame Eike for everything and is simply angry about what happened. In Endings D and B2, where Hugo is stopped by either Margarete or Eckart respectively, Hugo apologizes and returns to his time, having forgiven Eike.
Wolfgang Wagner[]
Having only limited interactions with Wolfgang Wagner, neither learn that they are the same person from different points in time, except for in the EX. Endings when Eike loses his amnesia. Due to Wolfgang's hardened and abrasive personality, as opposed to Eike's more polite and friendly one, the two rarely talk much when in the presence of one another. However, Wolfgang instantly becomes grateful and kind towards Eike when the latter gives him the Philosopher's Stone.
Helena Wagner/The Fortune Teller[]
Eike and Helena are husband and wife, though Eike is always unaware of this except in the EX. Endings and it is unknown if Helena knows the truth after she became a spirit. However, they have known each other for more that 417 years since he was Wolfgang Wagner and she was just Helena, though as Eike he first met Helena when she was the Fortune Teller in 2001. As the Fortune Teller, she aided Eike in trying to cheat his death by telling him when he was supposed to die. He then met her during the time she was sick in 1580, which was when Helena first met Eike. Due to neither apparently knowing their marital status to one another, their romantic history in their former lives is never brought up. However, the two have a friendly relationship and trust each other, with Helena being Eike's only constant ally as he attempts to change his fate.
Oleg Franssen[]
Eike has had more encounters with Oleg Franssen than any of the latter's ancestors, and has impacted his life the most. The two first met in 2001, where Oleg was a failing film maker with no chance of making a career. When forced by Homunculus to go to 1979, Eike was seen by a young Oleg when he appeared from thin air. This somehow led to Oleg coming up with the idea of a film, along with the idea he could someone Eike, though this likely vanished after he kept failing. However, Eike then altered Oleg's future again by meeting him in 1980 and befriending him, before giving him the idea of a better film that was secretly based on Eike's adventures, and Oleg gave him a Faberge Egg Watch made by his father as thanks. This event led to Oleg becoming far more successful in his life.
Mr. Franssen[]
Eike had only a small interaction with Mr. Franssen, so there relationship only remained polite and civil. However, like Alfred Brum he seemed to agree with Eike's suggestions on what to do with the Brum Estate.
Karl Franssen[]
Being at the very least a small fan of his paintings in 2001, Eike knew of Karl Franssen when he visited him in the 1580s. The two were on civil terms, with Karl often using Eike to help come up with ideas for paintings, which changed his paintings in the future. However, their relationship never progressed more than this.
Miriam Brum[]
Eike first encountered Miriam when he had traveled to 1980, and became determined to save her from her predestined death. On his first try, she didn't believe him and pretended to go a different way, which caused people to become angry with him. On his second try, he chased her and managed to save her from her death, causing her to be grateful. Twenty-one years later, having apparently forgotten much about how Eike looked, she met him again and was friendly towards him. It is unknown if she suspects Eke of being the same man who saved her or not.
Alfred Brum[]
First meeting each other when Eike first visited 1902, the two were slightly at odds at first, with Alfred being suspicious of Eike's interest in the former's house, not knowing it would one day become the museum Eike often visits in 2001. However, Alfred soon warms up to him and becomes more friendly after Eike helps him decide to make his house a art museum or a library.
Sibylla Brum[]
Eike first met Sibylla during his first trip to 1902, after befriending her father Alfred. The two are polite and friendly to each other, with Eike being surprised yet amused by the young yet determined girl. The two apparently enjoy each other's company, with Eike apparently being the only one noticing that Sibylla is unhappy not having time to be a kid. She is grateful when he brings her a kitten to play with, further solidifying their friendship.
Interactions with Past/Future Selves[]
It has been shown that there are five, alternate future versions of Eike Kusch and three alternate past versions. However, they are only considered alternate from the point of view from one of two versions of Eike; one who received the Egg Ornament with a letter inside and the one that did not. The future versions have always been identified as the juggler or street performer. The first time Eike meets the juggler, his identity is blurry. He is either a alternate Eike who will give Eike a Egg Ornament , while also being a version of Eike the player can play as, or a unknown version who who is suspected to have somehow acquired the juggler outfit and went back in time to prevent Eike's first death. However, he may also be a alternate version of the juggler with the egg letter, who simply failed to interact with Eike but still succeeded in preventing his future death.
The second juggler is a version if Eike the player can be. This Eike needed a metal plate of some kind to prevent his death. To do this, he went back in time with an Egg Ornament which he got from Sybilla in 1902 and threw it at his past self to do the work for him. This one is found in a photo of the Brums if Eike recieved the egg letter, due to Eike existing in the timeline created from the juggler. This version of the juggler has a alternate version who traveled to the timeline that still had the tree, while the prime version traveled to a timeline with either flowers or a statue.
The third juggler is never actually seen by Eike and it is unclear what timeline he originated from, but it is clear that he was briefly seen by Karl Franssen. He is then at some point painted by memory by the artist, with the painting ending up in the Brum art museum in many possible timelines.
However, the painting is altered by a alternate Eike Kusch whose timeline may or may not have been very different from the juggler's, resulting in him having his mask off. It is not known how this alteration came to be, but it is possible Franssen somehow managed to connect the Eike he met and the juggler he saw.
The final version of the juggler seen existed in a possible future for the Eike in the timeline created from the many possible endings. Like the second juggler, the one who needs his past self to get a metal plate, this version of the juggler comes from the future for the reason to give Eike the Egg Ornament with a letter inside while also preventing his original death. However, he instead did it to deliver information about the Philosopher's Stone instead to get a metal plate. It is not known what caused this Eike to go back in time for this reason. However, it might be that in his future, he took too long to do anything and lost the Philosopher's Stone, making him go back to convince his past self to do something quicker than he did.
As the juggler, Eike will encounter a alternate past version from a timeline where the tree was replaced with flowers or a statue of himself. The other alternate past version is a Eike who met the juggler with the note while still in the timeline with the tree and the only playable alternate past Eike.
A more obvious example of how Eike interacted with his past self is when he meets Wolfgang Wagner in the 1580s. It is because of Eike that Wagner had the Philosopher's Stone to release Homunculus, thus resulting in Wagner being de-aged into Eike.
Another obvious example is how he can interact with his past self who was sleeping in Cafe Sonne. When he touched his past self, both Eike's are erased from existence.
Alternate Eike Theory[]
There is a theory that suggests that Eike may not be Wolfgang Wagner with immortality, but instead his descendant. When Eike found Homunculus in the destroyed lab in the 1580s, Homunculus didn't recognize Eike, which he would know if he had made Eike young. Also, Homunculus had been trapped back in the stone following this event. In Ending E, Homunculus said that he had instead made Wolfgang Wagner vanish instead of making him young. While the djinn may have lied, it is possible that there are two timelines that interact at that point: in one timeline Eike is Dr. Wagner while in the other he is a descendant of Dana, Wagner's biological daughter, or Hugo. This theory is supported in the EX.Ending, where a man and boy who look like Eike and Hugo respectively are seen in the present, suggesting both are descended from the Wagner family. This theory is also supported by the fact that nearly every character, such as Oleg Franssen, has an ancestor who looks just like them, so Eike looking like Wagner isn't impossible. This theory could apply to Homunculus as well: Homunculus is first freed in timeline A and then resealed, only for the de-aged Wagner to take him into timeline B where he is fully released and free to interact with both timelines. However, there could be other theories.

Eike: Oh great, so I have one foot in the grave, is that it?
Eike: You! Twenty years isn’t just something you can erase from history and relive! Don’t you understand how serious time is?
Eike: And in doing that, I changed other peoples’ lives. Is my own fate worth that much? Is yours? So how am I supposed to feel?
Eike: It’s over, finally over. Man, this has been the longest day of my life. The streetlights seem so bright. I never noticed that before. I guess I just took it all for granted, but this place can be so beautiful. Everything is, really, I just never realized it. The trees and the air and the small things you do every day. The way time passes, all beautiful. That’s what life’s all about. And it was staring me in the face all this time. All the stars up there… I must be lucky. I know now how beautiful it is to be alive.

- The original name for the game, Shadow of Memories, is a hint towards the fact that Eike suffers from amnesia and can't remember his past as Wolfgang Wagner. However, the American name Shadow of Destiny, could be a reference to how the future is always changing and isn't clear, or a reference to how Wolfgang Wagner's future is filled with gaps in his memory.
